Center a tackless strip on the top stair tread 1 4 inch from the back edge of the tread where the tread meets the riser and nail it in place.

Clean all of the stairs with a clean damp cloth.
When you re finally done with the padding you can start installing the carpet stair treads.
First install the tread as described above.
All installed carpet stair treads can be easily removed or replaced as needed.
You can use an awl to push the carpet stair tread in.

If the stair is open on the side with railing posts the carpet must be cut around each post and re joined on the other side.
